Surgical Abortion
Concerned Women's Center offers terminations up to 16 weeks from your last menstrual period. This type of abortion is relatively low-risk and normally takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Both local and conscious sedation are provided at AAA Concerned Women's Center.
When you arrive you will be greeted and asked to provide a brief medical history to be reviewed. Your first morning urine specimen will then be used to confirm your pregnancy. Next, you will be taken to the laboratory, a small amount of blood is then drawn to test for anemia and to determine your RH factor.
An Ultra-Sonographer will perform an ultrasound to establish the age of your pregnancy. A Medical Assistant will provide an explanation of the procedure to you and answer any question you may have. The Medical assistant will give you post operative instructions and discuss risks and possible complications with you, as well as providing you with birth control information.
In the procedure room you will be attended by a medical assistant and Board Certified Gynecologist. When your procedure is completed, another ultrasound will be performed. You will rest in the recovery room for approximately 30 minutes, before being discharged by a nurse.
Non-Surgical Abortion
For pregnancy under 8 weeks, an alternative to surgical termination is available. The "Abortion Pill" (RU-486) is available to women who are less than 56 days from their last menstrual periods. Mifeprex (www.earlyopptionpill.com) is available to those who meet the criteria. After your blood work and an ultrasound are performed, and explanation of this option will be provided, to help you decide if this procedure is right for you.
Mifeprex is administered in our office, then 72 hours later another medication (Misoprostol) is administered orally at home to cause the uterus to expel the pregnancy tissue.
The Morning-After Pill
This is an option for women who have had unprotected intercourse and do not wish to become pregnant. "the morning after pill " is used to prevent pregnancy after having sex without birth control. If you have had unprotected intercourse within the last 72 hours this emergency contraception can be effective.
